girl with perfumeStop and put down the perfume bottle. Now take a moment to consider whether it’s the right fragrance for the season. “Summer scents are typically much lighter,” says Sue Phillips, president of Scenterprises Ltd. “Since it’s hot, the last thing you want is an overpowering, heavy fragrance.” Strong formulas rich in vanilla, musk or spices are likely to smolder you, so opt for airy, barely there scents.

Phillips suggests crisp citrus notes, like grapefruit, lemon and sweet mandarin, which evoke energizing moods. Try Clinique Happy ($42.00 at Nordstrom), an irresistible concoction made up of ruby red grapefruit, boysenberry bush flower and hawaiian wedding flower.

Want to take a beach day to work? Spritz some Issey Miyake L’eau d’Issey Summer ($59 at Nordstrom). Sprays with a hint of green grass, green teas, hyacinth and even pine are other notes that will make you feel rejuvenated, adds Phillips. Jo Malone ($55 at Nordstrom) does just that. When it comes to flowery perfumes apply with care, they tend to be heavy; instead, try delicate floral sprays, like Marc Jacobs Lola ($68 at Nordstrom).

Whatever your choice, remember, fragrance triggers emotions that are tied to our mood, concludes Phillips.
